Museums & culture
Fancy a day of culture or looking for something fun on a less sunny day?
Even then, there's plenty to do in the area. From special art and the history of the Colonies of Benevolence to life behind prison walls. A few fun tips for young and old.
Museum of Fake Art – Vledder
A museum that's just a little different. Here it's all about art forgeries and the stories behind them. Can you distinguish real from fake? Besides fake art, there's also glass art and work by various artists to see.
A surprisingly fun museum and very close by.

Miramar Sea Museum – Vledder
A sea museum in the middle of Drenthe, you might not expect that immediately. Miramar is a small and quirky museum with shells, corals and all sorts of other finds from the sea.
Nice to pop in if you're in Vledder and also a fun destination with children.

Museum De Proefkolonie – Frederiksoord
In Frederiksoord you discover the special story of the Colonies of Benevolence. Over 200 years ago, poor families from the cities came here to build a new life.
De Proefkolonie tells that story in a modern and accessible way. Interesting for adults, but there's also plenty for children to see and discover. And if you're there anyway, it's nice to cycle through Frederiksoord and the surrounding area.

National Prison Museum – Veenhuizen
This is one where you can easily spend a few hours. In the Prison Museum you discover everything about crime and punishment throughout the centuries. You can view old cells and get a completely different picture of the special prison village of Veenhuizen.
There's also a lot for children to see and do. Be sure to explore Veenhuizen itself, because the village and its many historic buildings make the visit extra enjoyable.

An evening of Shakespeare in Diever
One of our personal recommendations is the Shakespeare Theater in Diever. Don't be put off by the name Shakespeare: the performances are very accessible, surprising and often with a lot of humor. The actors are amateurs, but perform at a remarkably high level and really involve the audience in the performance.
Just as much fun is the atmosphere around it. The open-air theater is beautifully situated in the greenery and it's wonderfully relaxed. Many visitors bring a cushion for the wooden benches and during the performance you can simply enjoy your own snacks and drinks. That informal atmosphere makes an evening in Diever extra special.

Every summer a different Shakespeare performance is on the program. A visit is therefore much more than just an evening at the theater; it's truly an experience. And extra nice from Vakantiegeluk: Diever is about 10 kilometers away and is therefore also easily accessible by bike.
As far as we're concerned, definitely a recommendation during your stay!
